In these times of frequent recalls of store-bought treats, why not have peace of mind when offering snacks and rewards to your pet? The safest and most nutritious food and treats that you can offer are made at home with high quality, wholefood ingredients. Eliminating fillers, by products and chemicals insures your pets have wholesome goodies made with love.
Yummy Dog Treats
These fresh dog treats contain no fillers or unnecessary carbohydrates. The best part is you can make a big batch and freeze some for later use. Your dog will love you for it.
Use local and organic
1 pound chopped beef
1 pound chopped sausage no casing
1/2 pound chicken livers
2-3 fresh eggs
3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup cottage cheese
Add one or more of these healing herbs for a wellness boost.
1/2 cup dried rosehips, soaked in warm filtered water until softened then drain
1/4 cup dried nettles
1/4 cup dried calendula flowers
In a large bowl, mix all ingredients very well. Spread in a shallow broiler pan or 9×13 glass baking dish. Bake at 350 for 35-45 minutes until cooked through and golden brown. (The 9×13 dish may take longer.) Remove from oven and carefully drain off rendered fat. Allow to cool. Cut into 1/2″ squares. Refrigerate. Will keep refrigerated for 3-5 days. Frozen up to 2 months.
Savory Cat Treats
Your cat will love these delicious and nutritious homemade treats. Alternate which fish you include for variety and interest for your feline friend.
6- 8 oz salmon, sardines or tuna in olive or sunflower oil
4 oz self rising flour
1 T nettle or catnip infused oil
1 T local honey
Preheat oven to 375. Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking pan. Flake the fish until small and uniform. Combine all ingredients into a soft dough. Spread dough evenly in the pan and bake for 15 – 20 minutes. Let cool, then cut into 1/2” squares. Keep in an airtight container or freeze for one month. (Recipe adapted from Animal Choices, www.animalchoices.co.uk)
You can also double these recipes for larger pets or multiple pet households.
